Jimmy Key is a survivor in a business with few old reporters. He's 27 and single, but girlfriend Merrie Matrix insists on working war-area assignments with him. Guerilla Ray Norman is usually with him. He makes millions with his byline well-promoted by Carson Kranmeyer, his satellite-owning agent, and spends or loses wildly in search of his worldwide stories. He's hated by the corporate press and governments, because he bypasses their reporting and controls.
The US bottom clamors for a share of the riches now consolidated in the top, so Congress zips-up the bottom in Iso-Wards behind high fences. However, darn it, riots create problems. The corpocracy press ignores the fighting, but Key, with sidekicks Merrie Matrix and Ray Norman, get the story on the ground and report it worldwide through Carson Kranmeyer's Independent Journalists Connection (IJC), which owns its own satellite. When the L.A. Iso-Ward gets shoulder-launched rockets and automatic rifles from Pancho the Mustache - the rebel leader who took Sonora and Baja from Mexico - Senator Bomblast and General Tasker, head of the Joint Chiefs, in an Oval Office meeting, shift the program from mere zipping-up to all-out zapping. Key and IJC are forced from the US so that no one can watch the zapping. But overseas, where the world's bottom outnumbers the world's top by five billion to one billion, Key and Kranmeyer find friends.
